loomscapes

jacquard woven cotton and rayon
each: 60" x 14" (series of 4)
2007

Loomscrapes is inspired both by the tradition of tapestry weaving and contemporary video game culture. Each weaving is composed of screen shots taken from LucasArts’ early 1990’s computer game, aptly named LOOM, to create “digital landscapes” that are curiously absent of narrative (unlike the well-known Bayeux Tapestry of France, a 230-foot long cloth made 1066 that depicts the battle of Hastings). The appropriated screen shots have been manipulated and pasted together in Photoshop to lend the quality of a timeline to the work. While the historical use of cloth as a substrate for depicting representational imagery, is nothing new, these weavings aim to conflate the familiarity of landscape with the surrealism of a virtual panorama.
